#ThisDayInHistory: On September 3, 1838, our great ancestor, Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, escaped slavery and embarked on a journey that would change the course of history. His escape would not have been possible without the courageous and selfless actions of Anna Murray, his future wife.

Anna, the unsung hero of this daring escape, was a free Black woman in Baltimore. She used her hard-earned savings to provide Frederick with the disguise of a sailor, complete with a red shirt and a seaman’s protection certificate. Her unwavering belief in his potential, even in the face of danger and uncertainty, was the driving force that propelled him toward freedom. Her steadfast support sustained him as they built a new life together in the North.

Anna’s love, determination, and resourcefulness were the bedrock of Frederick’s success. She made tremendous sacrifices, leaving her home and community behind to join him in the fight for justice and equality. Together, they forged a life of freedom for themselves and became potent symbols of resistance and resilience.

Today, we honor Anna Murray and Frederick Douglass, a couple whose profound strength, faith, and unwavering commitment to justice left an indelible mark on history. Let us celebrate their enduring partnership and the collective impact they made in shaping the course of history.
